# Mind-body basics

Mind-body medicine looks at how thoughts, emotions, behavior and the body influence one another. These basics are the everyday habits that research connects with better health.

## Key takeaways

- Five areas matter most: relaxation, nutrition, exercise, thinking patterns and connection.
- Small, regular habits beat large, occasional efforts.
- These habits support medical care and do not replace it.

## The five pillars

- Relaxation: a daily practice that lowers physical arousal
- Nutrition: a plant-rich, balanced way of eating
- Exercise: regular movement for body and mood
- Mindset: noticing and reframing unhelpful thoughts, building resilience
- Connection: relationships and support, which shape health throughout life

## Where to begin

Pick one change. For many people the easiest is a 10-minute relaxation practice at a fixed time. Add a daily walk next, then adjust food and sleep. Meditation programs have moderate evidence for anxiety, depression and pain.[1] (source 1)

## Common questions

### Is mind-body medicine the same as alternative medicine?

No. It is a set of evidence-informed practices used alongside conventional care, and the strength of evidence varies by condition.

### How long does it take to see a benefit?

Some changes, such as calmer breathing, are immediate. Many studies measure benefit after eight weeks of regular practice.
